What is the Mobility Mod for vShare?

The Mobility Mod for vShare is an enhancement to vShare which allows for mobile and tablet users the ability to view and use your vShare site without the use of or need for Adobe Flash. The mod comes with a feature rich Webkit-based interface which is designed for smaller screen (7" or less) mobile devices. Tablet users (larger than 7") are able to browse your existing full site and are able to still view the videos without the us of or need for Adobe Flash.

What devices are supported?

The following mobile devices have been tested and are supported with this mod:

  • Apple iPhone (iOS 3.0 or higher)
  • Apple iPod Touch (iOS 3.0 or higher)
  • Motorola Droid (Android 2.0 or higher)
  • Motorola Droid X (Android 2.1 or higher)
  • Motorola Droid 2 (Android 2.1 or higher)
  • HTC Evo (Android 2.1 or higher)
  • HTC Nexus One (Android 2.2 or higher)
  • Samsung Epic (Android 2.1 or higher)
  • Samsung Nexus S (Android 2.3 or higher)
  • Samsung Droid Charge (Android 2.2 or higher)
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab (Android 2.2 or higher)
  • Blackberry Torch* (Blackberry OS 6 or higher)

The following tablet devices have been tested and are supported with this mod:

  • Apple iPad (iOS 4 or higher)
  • Motorola Xoom (Android OS 3.0 or higher)
  • ASUS EEE Pad Transformer (Android OS 3.0 or higher)
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (Android OS 3.0 or higher)

Although these are the tested devices, any device running iOS 3 (tablet iOS 4) or Android 2.1 (tablet OS 3.0) or higher should be able to use the system.

* - While the Blackberry Torch is supported, carrier restrictions may limit video playback as file size restrictions may be in affect. Please contact your carrier for more information

Are other devices supported (such as BB5, BB Playbook, non-touch screen, or regular feature phones)?

Devices running Blackberry OS 5 (or below), non-touch screen devices (such as the Blackberry Pearl, which is running Blackberry OS 6, but not touch screen), the Blackberry Playbook (which runs QNX), and standard feature phones are not supported. For Blackberry 5 (and below) devices, these devices are not supported due to carrier file size restrictions. Most carriers limit the maximum file size to around 3MB. Because of this restriction, it is not possible to stream most videos to the Blackberry OS 5 devices even though they technically support the video type used with the mod. Devices such as the Blackberry Playbook (and, for that matter, the HP TouchPad) are not supported due to limited testing. It should be technically possible for those devices to work, but until adequate testing can be done, they are not supported. Devices such as the Pearl, which does run Blackberry 6, but is not touch screen, are not supported because the interface is designed for a touch screen device. The mod does not include an interface that is designed for standard screens. Finally, feature phones are not supported due to limited rendering and video support.

What are the Included Features?

What are the Mod's Requirements?

In order to use the Mobility Mod for vShare 2.8, your site must have the following requirements installed:

  • vShare 2.8.1
  • Ioncube, Zend Optimizer, and/or SourceGuardian Loaders (can be provided as a runtime if not installed)
  • ffmpeg w/H.264 (x264) installed
  • AtomicParsley*
  • Mod Auth Token**

* - AtomicParsley is not required to be installed, but is highly recommended. AtomicParsley injects H.264 videos with meta data which allows for the videos to be streamed. Without AtomicParsley, videos would completely download before playing.

** - Only required if you want to use the enhanced security features. Basic security does not require Mod Auth Token

What is Mod Auth Token?

Mod Auth Token is an Apache module that works very similar to mod_secdownload that is found in lighttpd. It allows for you to generate time-limited links to your videos (as opposed to static, permanent links). After a set period of time, the links expire and are no longer valid for downloading. Unlike mod_secdownload, Mod Auth Token allows for links to be limited against both time and the user's IP. This helps to ensure that the link can only be viewed by the person that is watching the video and cannot be shared or hotlinked to for others to see. Note that Mod Auth Token does not prevent a person from downloading a video (a streaming server would be required to prevent that). It does, however, prevent people from linking to your videos, wasting your precious bandwidth.

Does the Mod Support Lighttpd?

Yes and no. Yes, the mod will work with a server that is running lighttpd (or any web-server for that matter). No, the mod does not support lighttpd's mod_secdownload feature. There are no plans to support mod_secdownload as it does not offer the same feature set that you can get from Mod Auth Token. Further, if your site is already running Apache, there is no need to take up extra CPU cycles just for link security.

Does the Mod Support Streaming?

If by streaming you are referring to a streaming server (such as RTMP), no. If by streaming you mean HTTP-based streaming, yes. However, for HTTP-based streaming to work, you must have AtomicParsley installed.

Does the Mod Support vShare 2.7?

Yes. For information on the Mobility Mod for vShare (2.7), click here.

Is the Source Code to the Mod Provided?

No. The Mobility Mod for vShare 2.8 is licensed software and is not open source.
